The Toyota Sports Center has long been inadequate, as the Lakers share space with the NHL Kings, kids’ sporting practices and the like.“If you visit our current facility, the name ‘Lakers’ is listed once on a little, tiny sign,” Harris said. “What’s become important to the Lakers and the players is their brand. The notion of having a training center where no one can find us doesn’t really work anymore. It worked in 1999, but it doesn’t work now.”The Los Angeles Clippers opened a $60 million practice facility in Playa Vista in 2008 after previously holding practices at an El Segundo Spectrum health club and a community college. The new Lakers facility, to be constructed of steel, aluminum and tinted glass, will allow natural sunlight to shine through, including in the locker rooms, and will feature digital signage integrated on the facade of the building.Architect Jim Renne emphasized that the building was designed to feel like a “second home” for the players and to allow fans access to everything Lakers. The facility is expected to generate $180,000 in annual taxes to the city and $350 million in annual economic benefits, according to a report by Kosmont Cos. During construction alone, the project is estimated to produce $136 million in economic benefits.Meanwhile, the Kings are expected to grow their footprint at the Toyota Sports Center, moving in their corporate team and expanding their business operations once the Lakers vacate their space.Council members last week could barely contain their excitement over the new Lakers facility, each raving about the proposal and enthusiastically supporting construction begin as soon as possible.“The design is beautiful,” Councilwoman Marie Fellhauer said. “I think it’s only going to add to the character of El Segundo.”Mayor Suzanne Fuentes said the Lakers have continually proven to be a good neighbor — donating to various organizations and schools in town and recently pledging $250,000 toward the new aquatics center.Fuentes, an El Segundo native, said the proposal is “thrilling,” especially for someone who grew up in the city.“If you had told us when we were growing up that the Lakers were going to be in the strawberry fields, I never would have believed you,” she said. There was a time when Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Magic Johnson would battle podiatrists on the basketball court. Not over ability, but space. The Showtime Lakers would hop from place to place, finding anywhere they could to practice, even local YMCAs.Now the Los Angeles Lakers will finally have a court of their own. The El Segundo City Council has granted unanimous approval of a new state-of-the-art training facility and exhibition venue for the NBA team, just one block north of the home it shares with he Los Angeles Kings at the Toyota Sports Center. The two-story, 122,000-square-foot facility is expected to open in spring 2017 at 710 N. Nash St. in Campus El Segundo.“We’re sort of like the resident who’s been living in an apartment and is finally going to own his own home. We’ve never built anything,” said Tim Harris, chief operating officer of the Lakers. The $80 million facility on 5 acres will not only house a double basketball court for Lakers practice and D-Fenders home games, two half-courts, a training area, team area, atrium, and courtyard but it also will serve as the team’s corporate headquarters.Harris said the new facility was a necessity to bring the team in line with today’s recruiting standards and give the players a second home. Before the year 2000, it was OK for the team to be nomadic — bouncing from space to space, Harris said. But, the sport and standards have evolved, he noted.“What’s acceptable for a training center has changed,” he said, adding that players and the NBA expect teams to provide high-quality nutrition, weight rooms, video-watching facilities and a community space.“Now you need so much more,” Harris said. “We have to provide players with a second home where they can grow and extend their career.” Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error

In addition the ability to market and communicate to team’s players and officials via the email function is invaluable. The growth and professionalism of the City Touch Club would not be possible with out Sporting Pulse.” Gavin Macdonald Competition & Events Manager City Touch “Brisbane Metropolitan Touch Association has been using Sporting Pulse for 5 seasons now and has found it a great system to use. We are the largest competition in Queensland with approximately 240 senior teams per season and about 70 junior teams. All of our draws are conducted on the system and uploaded to the website for all our members to have access. We have reduced number of calls to our office by up to 50 %, with most teams now finding times of games on the website, or using the automatic reminder system. Saving us many hours on the phone, that can be put back into administration of the sport. With the ability to keep members on the database from season to season, we now have an extensive database of members that could be used for anything from sponsorship to keeping in touch with members. We also now have many of our teams and clubs using the newsletter section of the website to inform their own team players of current news. We use the website for notification of wet weather games in conjunction with our 1300 wet weather number; this has also reduced our calls by about 50% on wet days. The ability for the system to produce all my scorecard labels saves us hours of work, and the sign on sheets for teams is also time saving. The system still has many features that I am still to utilize, such as the player tribunal section, the touch downs for each player etc. With the system continually being upgraded and sportingpluse giving excellent support, I would recommend any association to use the program.” Michelle Fletcher Administrator Brisbane City Touch The SportingPulse and the ATA package will allow your sporting organisation to: * Administer all your competitions with our state of the art Competition Management Software * Place your competitions ladders, fixtures and results on the Internet * Easily administer your organisation’s web site * Reach your members through our centralised communication platform * Take advantage of our “top tier” Internet access deals for your sporting organisation and your members * Manage your membership registration via our secure Member Database Solution * Receive training and support in competition management and web design * Generate revenue through our partnership fund-raising opportunities * The ATA exists to serve Touch participants. This is the question recently posed* by Slate’s Seth Stevenson in reference to the case of Karen Klein, the bullied bus monitor in upstate New York. Students called her horrible names and brought her to tears. When video of her torment was posted online, a groundswell of appalled people donated more than $700,000 to a spontaneous campaign on IndieGoGo. (Klein accepted the money, retired and put $100,000 of the sum toward an anti-bullying cause she created.)As Stevenson notes, campaigns to help suffering individuals crop up online everyday – including for people in life and death situations – but they rarely spark the scale of reaction to Karen Klein. What was it about this particular situation that prompted a response from 32,000 donors?Stevenson asked Stephen Reicher, a psychology professor at Scotland’s University of St Andrews, and Reicher cited the following factors – which should be familiar to those of us who enjoy reading about behavioral economics!1. A tangible cause: As Reicher told Stevenson, “To say lots of people are suffering is an abstract concept. To see this one woman suffering, and be able to help her, is more concrete.” This is the identifiable victim or singularity effect I’ve often cited on this blog.2. Archetypal elements: Reicher talked about how the video causes us to flash back to our own childhoods on the school bus, which is powerful. It also inverts roles – the children are bullying the adult, which seemed to evoke strong emotions. This reminds me of the Story Wars idea — that basic universal themes unite audiences around causes.3. Online dynamics: The network effects of the Internet encourage piling on – and can guide our actions. We see this in fundraising all the time – collective action begets more collective action. We join the crowd.Bottom line? What we know works, worked in a big way because of Karen Klein’s story. Remember that, above all, is always the root of every movement. There is someone who stood for something – or meant something to us – and everything grows from that.*Hat tip to Clam Lorenz for sending me this article!
Photo via Green America. The Chronicle of Philanthropy has a fascinating interview with fundraising guru Penelope Burk, author of the upcoming Donor-Centered Leadership.Turns out it’s not just donors who grow weary of too many direct mail appeals and telemarketing calls. It’s apparently a frequent reason fundraisers quit their jobs — the relentless pressure to bombard donors. They’d prefer to take the time to figure out which solicitations work, but they often aren’t given the time or latitude to have a more thoughtful approach.Over-solicitation, says Burk, is the most common reasons donors give for stopping their support of a charity. Instead donors want to know what’s been done with their money. Then they’d be willing to give again. But too often, they get appeals instead of thanks and reports on impact. No wonder we have 60% churn in our sector. So what do we do instead? Here’s Burk’s advice.1. Thank donors after they give.2. Send them a follow up thanks with detailed information about how their money was used.3. Only ask for money AFTER you do these two things, and when you do, be as specific as you can about why you are asking for money. What specific cause will benefit?Great advice.Do you agree? Do you feel this way?
Accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, your nonprofit website is a valuable tool for interacting with your target audience and allowing visitors to learn about your nonprofit. Having the insights to efficiently manage your website are important to optimize the experience for your supporters and ensure the success of your nonprofit. Fortunately, Google Analytics provides organizations with a cost effective way to monitor the metrics that matter and help your team make informed decisions. Here are three metrics that your nonprofit should be measuring: This organization located in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, is generating a significant amount of its traffic from outside its city limits. Based on this insight, the organization could consider expanding their target audience into new geographic territories or hosting a fundraising event in a new location. Mobile Traffic Behavior As the number of mobile site searches increases, optimizing your nonprofit mobile site for smartphone and tablet users is becoming even more critical to interacting and engaging with your supporters. Mobile traffic behavior metrics let you monitor your site’s mobile traffic growth over time. When analyzing this metric, it’s important to remember that an increase in mobile traffic growth alone doesn’t indicate that your site is mobile friendly. As mobile visitors typically spend less time on a site that isn’t adequately optimized for their devices, time on site, and average visit duration metrics should also be evaluated. Page Bounce RatesA “bounce” occurs when a visitor navigates to a page and then immediately leaves. Depending on the intent of any given webpage, a high bounce rate could indicate a low level of audience interaction and engagement. For example, if your volunteer application page has a high bounce rate, then you need to reevaluate the page’s content as visitors are not spending enough time on the page to fill out any information.Although these three metrics only begin to cover the extent of the metrics offered by Google Analytics, they provide a foundation from which you can start to measure the performance of your nonprofit website and your reputation. Knowing how to use the information displayed by these metrics will undoubtedly aid your nonprofit staff in optimizing your organization’s website content and improving overall audience engagement. For more information about the metrics that your organization should be utilizing download the free e-book, Top 10 Things Your Association Should Measure in Google Analytics.DJ Muller is president and founder of WebLink International, the creators of WebLink Connect™ the innovative, insightful and intuitive association management software with superior customer support. WebLink empowers hundreds of trade and professional associations and more than 500,000 small and medium businesses to help them acquire and retain more customers. Audience LocationThe audience location metrics enable you to specifically determine the geographic areas that your site content is reaching. By monitoring this metric, your nonprofit will have the tools it needs to determine if it’s effectively reaching its intended target audience. Additionally, this metric can be used as a means to reveal emerging or previously unidentified audiences as well as the effectiveness of your promotional efforts.
The power of imagery is undeniable. Visuals have a way of emphasizing a message and motivating viewers to act. Watch as I share some examples and walk through the best ways to stimulate and engage your supporters and donors through images.
Expect the best, prepare for the worst. Sounds a little gloomy, but it’s actually a great strategy. If your nonprofit has a communications plan in hand when a PR crisis hits, you’ll be glad you followed that motto. How well you emerge from a crisis hinges on how well you manage your message. 4. Restore. The worst is over, so it’s time to focus on restoring your good reputation within the community. Keep sending out positive news through your communications channels. Update those channels early and often—more frequently than in calmer times. Share press releases, testimonials, blog posts, and so on about the great work you’ve been doing and continue to do. Whatever the format, optimize this flurry of positive online content for search engines. This will help restore your good reputation, but equally important, it will fix your SEO by pushing crisis-related results off the front page of a Web search about your organization. Out of sight, out of mind. 5. Learn. Convene your crisis team and talk about what went well and what you’d do differently next time. Ask your key stakeholders for feedback. Include key members of your board and staff in this conversation.Did you minimize the story or let it drag on? How could you have better managed the news cycle? Did you act quickly enough? Did you hold back too much info? Roll this feedback into a revised crisis plan. These five steps are simple enough to implement whether you have just one person handling communications or an entire team. 1. Plan. We often don’t believe we’ll find ourselves in a crisis situation and don’t plan in advance. Trust us, it can happen. Before trouble strikes, assemble your crisis team. These are people who work well together and can deliver your message calmly and consistently. Brainstorm potential crisis scenarios. Talk about if and how your organization will respond in certain situations. Prepare templates of press releases, blog posts, Web pages, even tweets and status updates that you can quickly customize to fit any situation. Not having to start from scratch when everything’s going haywire helps your team stay calm and focused. 3. Monitor. Always know what’s going on in your market. This is another area where having monitoring channels in place makes life easier. These could include traditional clipping services as well as digital channels like social media. It helps to know what people are saying about your organization and whether it’s positive or negative. A crisis doesn’t happen very often, but don’t press your luck. Create or revise your communications plan, and you’ll be ready for the next storm that blows your way. Adapted from the Nonprofit 911 webinar “Crisis Communications for Nonprofits” with Susan Kearney, COO of Network for Good. Download the full webinar. 2. Communicate. Get your social media monitoring in place so you can spot a potential situation before it gets out of control. If you start noticing spikes of negativity, pay attention and nip it in the bud. If the issue spirals, remember the goal of crisis communications is to minimize the news cycle. Get out ahead of the situation with your prepared materials.Across all channels, deliver a consistent message. Whether it’s the evening news, local newspaper, your website or blog, people should hear consistent info about the facts of the issue, your response to it, what actions your taking, and what’s coming next. Be as transparent and honest as possible. The more up-front your message, the more credible your organization will appear.Social media in particular provides your group an opportunity to respond quickly. Again, be consistent. Don’t be defensive or negative, stay positive and matter-of-fact, and avoid commentary or opinion.
