Danny Rose scored a late winner as Tottenham came from behind to break down Swansea for a vital victory in their quest for a maiden Premier League title.Swansea came into this game after a 15-day break, while Spurs have clocked up 270 minutes of football since their stunning win at Manchester City. And Swansea demonstrated their freshness when they took an early lead at White Hart Lane through Alberto Paloschi, who finished well from close range after Leon Britton’s shot deflected into the Italian’s path. That jolted Spurs into action, but Heung-min Son and Eric Dier were both denied by the superb Lukasz Fabianski in the opposition goal. Spurs upped the tempo in the second half, with their relentless pressure when second half substitute Nacer Chadli diverted Kyle Walker’s low drive into the net, which stirred the home fans as their side looked for a winner. And the decisive goal came from an unlikely source – left-back Rose – who drilled a low shot through a crowd of bodies into the bottom corner after the visitors only half cleared a Spurs corner. The win is a vital one, particularly with rivals Arsenal losing at Old Trafford, and sees them cut Leicester’s lead at the top of the Premier League back down to two, while Mauricio Pochettino’s side pull three points clear of Arsenal ahead of next weekend’s north London derby.– Follow Joy Sports on Twitter: @JoySportsGH. For an exterior to be great, it needs to be sustainable. Where you choose to build and how you choose to site your homes present major opportunities to maximize green strategies. The life span and the material choices of a home have a huge impact on the environment as well. The longer a home will last, the high and better the intended use for the resources that went into its construction.I have found that the best way to market your company and claim green status is to quantify and rate a home with a trusted third-party program. As a builder, I chose the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED for Homes rating system. How does LEED for Homes cover these exterior strategies?Location & linkagesWithin the LEED for Homes system, there are two ways to earn points for where you build. Each has the potential for 10 points in the LEED for Homes rating system:1. The LEED for Neighborhood Development rating system, rolling out later this year, integrates the ideals of new urbanism, smart growth, and green building for entire neighborhoods. The program encourages healthy living in developments and a reduction in urban sprawl through walkability and community connections. This could be a boon to developers, who can take advantage of local incentives for green development, receive public exposure in the media, and achieve higher tenancy rates.2. A step-by-step pathway to earning points for individual homes. The intent of these credits is to avoid environmental degradation of agricultural and natural resources. The credit options for this category include:Site selection. Avoid environmentally sensitive sites, including those in the FEMA 100-year flood plain, habitats of threatened or endangered species, within 100 feet of a body of water, land that was previously public parkland, and parcels whose soil is “significant” (integral to its ecosystem or endangered).Preferred locations. Choose infill sites or those that were previously developed.Infrastructure. Choosing a site that has access to existing water and sewer lines avoids extensions of utility lines, reducing the environmental impact of construction.Community resources and transit. Increasing homeowner options for walkability and access to public transportation eases the environmental impact of automobiles.Access to open space. Locating developments near accessible, open green space can boost property values and benefit occupant health.Sustainable sitesOnce you have a site chosen, what you choose to do there can burden the environment, or it could enhance the property’s natural value and, in turn, the economic value of the home.Site stewardship strategies such as protecting disturbed topsoil and preventing erosion and runoff with straw bales and bio-swales not only benefit the environment and resources, they can also protect the developer from costly fines and cleanup costs.Using native, drought-tolerant plants can mean lower costs from shopping locally and less homeowner maintenance, a great value-added marketing tool.Reduce the heat island effect by providing shade and reflective exterior surface materials to lighten cooling loads.Manage surface water with vegetated buffers, terracing, and vegetated roofs to control runoff from the site. Permeable pavers are also a good strategy here.Pest control with physical barriers, such as stainless-steel wire mesh, or natural materials like borate reduces the amount of environmental toxins. Integrate these methods with a diverse landscaping plan that increases plant diversity and avoids species that can promote pest infestation for best results.Compact development—the denser, the better—helps toward this credit, which recognizes preservation of undisturbed land from urban sprawl, walkability, and transportation efficiency, as outlined above in “Locations & Linkages.”Innovation and designID 2 credit: Durability managementAddressing how time and weather affect the exterior of a home will increase its life. Protect against exterior moisture, pests, and natural disasters with such strategies as appropriate positive drainage away from the home and proper window installation and flashing.Materials and resourcesMR 2 credit: Environmentally preferable productsChoosing products that are environmentally beneficial in some way can earn credits in this category: reclaimed, recycled, locally produced, or sustainably harvested, FSC-certified wood materials. I have had success with reclaimed wind fence lumber from Wyoming. It is 100% salvaged and durable, and has a great weathered aesthetic.SELL, SELL, SELLCreating great exteriors with less environmental impact that are close to community resources, easy to maintain, highly durable, and healthy is an easier sell to clients. Most of these strategies are not only attractive to buyers, they can cost the same as, or in some cases less than, traditional methodology.
Mac Pro Roundup! We’ve pulled together a ton of resources to get you up to speed on Apple’s new top of the line computer. If you’re like me, you’re eyeing up the new Mac Pro with a mix of child-like glee and technical questioning. If you’re still wondering if it’s worth the money then this round up of Mac Pro reviews, test runs, benchmarks and opinions will hopefully give you all the answers you’re looking for.Quick Facts about the Mac ProFor a quick summary of the Mac Pro check out Macworld’s 90 second review in the video above. If you want to know more nuts and bolts details about the Mac Pro you can head on over to Apple’s exceptionally sleek looking official site.On launch day Studio Daily posted 10 tips about the Mac Pro which offers a pretty good summary too. It has more recently been confirmed by OWC (via Macrumors) that the CPU on the Mac Pro motherboard is in fact removable, and therefore upgradeable.Oh and if you hadn’t noticed, it’s actually pretty small… 9.9 inches (25 cm) tall to be precise.Image from MacWorldMac Pro ReviewsAll the major tech sites have written up reviews of the Mac Pro. As this is a roundup I won’t repeat them all here but here is a decent selection of the best the web has to offer.AnandTech probably wins points for the most comprehensive review of the new Mac Pro in this 15-part review. There really isn’t a nook or cranny these guys haven’t covered. So if that’s the kind of depth you’re looking for, read this. The new Mac Pro offers an option for those users whose workloads can benefit from having more cores, memory and GPU performance. The latest version of Final Cut Pro as well as the rest of Apple’s professional apps do a great job of splitting their work across multiple CPU cores. Even simple tasks like importing photos into iPhoto or Lightroom is extremely well threaded these days. It’s in these workloads where a 6, 8 or 12-core Mac Pro can offer a healthy performance advantage.Engadget has a decent review here, as does Macworld, who both rate the machine very highly. Macworld also has another review about the Mac Pro’s upgradability including this short video above. If teardown’s are your thing then you really can’t beat Ifixit Teardown which you can read all about here. Or watch the video below. From a creative standpoint Larry Jordan has posted his thoughts on the performance of the Mac Pro for video editing and which configuration would give you the best bang for your buck in this extensive review. The Verge has an interesting ‘conversational’ review of the Mac Pro with plenty of insights from The Verge’s video team including director/editor John Lagomarsino and Regina Dellea, their post-production coordinator. We’ll use the Thunderbolt 2 ports for peripherals like BlackMagic capture boxes, external hard drives, and fiber adapters to connect to our SAN. I’m glad they stuck with the dual Ethernet setup, too. It’s always been a standout feature in the Mac Pro that you can connect to two wired networks simultaneously, or gang them together for double the bandwidth. I do wish Apple had included an SD card slot like they do in their other Macs, though.Should I buy a Mac Pro or an iMac?The main question you’re probably asking yourself is: should I buy a Mac Pro (you already know you want one) or should I buy an iMac?Arstechnica has a good opinion piece on whether you should drop $10,000 on a new Mac Pro here – thinking through all of the possible upgrade options to arrive at that top price.Larry Jordan also shares his early thoughts on how to get the best bang for your buck when buying a Mac Pro (prior to the testing above).Chris Potter from Screenlight.tv also has a very detailed financial breakdown of the decision to purchase a Mac Pro of an iMac here. In Chris’ worked example he comes out in favor of the Mac Pro.Some add-ons like a monitor should be included in the price of the Mac Pro, as they are needed to build a complete system that compares with the all-in-one iMac. In the case of the Mac Pro this could add $999 for a Thunderbolt Display, to $3,200 for a 4K monitor. Of course, if a 4K monitor is necessary for your setup, then an iMac shouldn’t be part of your consideration set anyway.Alternatively you could try building your own Hackintosh Mac Pro. Editor Dylan Reeve took at a good crack at it in this post, including a handy shopping list of parts if you’re brave enough to give it a go. Although he has to conclude that:In the end though the Mac Pro is a totally custom build by Apple. Currently we simply can’t deliver the Thunderbolt 2 ports with that CPU, for example. Similarly the only ECC-supporting motherboard I could find compatible with the CPU has no USB3, only supports 1600MHz RAM and only offers 3 PCIe slots. This build is simply as close as I could get with what’s currently available. Also a rather enterprising German ‘modder’ has built this hackintosh out of an actual trashcan from Amazon. Not for the faint of heart!Image from TonyMacX86
Kareena Kapoor was in the Capital on Tuesday to promote her upcoming film, Heroine, which opens on Friday. And her husband-to-be Saif Ali Khan was spotted at the London Fashion Week attending the Burberry SS13 Collection at West Albert Lawns in Kensington Garden on Monday.Even as Saif’s mother Sharmila Tagore has sent out the invitation cards and the trousseau is being designed, the actors are still mum about their much-anticipated wedding on October 16.”Whenever Saif and I do it, our fans will 100 per cent know. Nobody knows about my wedding. I want people to talk about my film instead. Whenever we decide it is the right time, we will tell the world about it. And currently, this is not the right time,” Kareena said.Reportedly, Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt has congratulated Saif and Kareena for their upcoming nuptials. “I am honoured that Angelina and Brad have wished me luck for my wedding. They are lovely people and I would definitely like to meet them,” Kareena said. One isn’t too sure whether Saif is in London to get a break from all the hype and hoopla, shop for some wedding goodies or just have a bachelor vacation while his bride-to-be is busy promoting her next big release.Kareena is currently excited about the upcoming film where she is playing the lead character of Mahi Arora. “It’s a performance-oriented film and I am playing such a character for the first time which has got so many layers in it. It will definitely break my image of portraying the girl-next-door in films,” she said. “I never had any mental pressure. I always wanted to work with Madhur Bhandarkar. When I first came on the set I didnt have any pre-conceived notions about him. I came with an open mind and tried to give my best possible shot,” Kareena added.Saif was seated on the front row at the London event. The actor looked dapper in an elegant black tuxedo teamed with a polka-dotted neck-tie. He also sported a beard at the show.(With inputs from PTI)advertisement

While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. It’s a big ask from us to you, but it also comes with a load of benefits like ad-free browsing (ads stink!), access to our premium room in The Chamber and monthly giveaways. The other thing it does is help stabilize our business into the future. As it turns out, sending folks on the road to cover games and provide 24/7 Pokes coverage like the excellent article you just read costs money. Because of our subscribers, we’ve been able to improve our work and provide the best OSU news and community anywhere online. Help us keep that up. And we’re back with the nerd portion of the posting. I usually let OKC Dave take stuff like this because he’s “statistically into things” but sometimes I like to take a deep dive into the stats of a given game and what it tells us about both teams. Here are a few notes.• That 2.46 points per drive number is good but not great if we’re looking at the national landscape. Even more so considering OSU was playing a FCS team. That number would have ranked No. 44 in the country last year. Not where you want to be considering the opponent.AdChoices广告• On the starting field position points gained and lost, I’m using these numbers and rounding up. In recent years, OSU has ranked reasonably well in this category. It was in the top 10 in both 2013 and 2011 and never in the bottom 50. Your own 26 is not where you want to be on average and it had a lot to do with a poor return game on OSU’s part. Central Arkansas punted 10 times and OSU had one total return yard. One. Not great!• OSU’s wasted yards (178) are a little misleading because I went ahead and counted the final drive which amounted to 55 yards and J.W. Walsh running out the clock at the end. Still, as Mike Yurcich noted, OSU’s yards gained and points posted do not match up right now. You shouldn’t gain nearly six hundy on anybody and not be able to crack the 40-point barrier.• Same goes for those negative swing points. Seven of them were on the final drive. Still, OSU needs to be better inside the red zone. It was an atrocious 109th in FBS last year in TD percentage in the red zone (which leads to a lot of negative swing points). The Walsh package will (should) help.• If you’re in the 50-60 percent range in defensive efficiency (meaning you hold offenses to 50 percent of what they normally gain), you aren’t losing. That might mean OSU holds Texas to 95 yards!
Putting a snowman on it. (Or reindeer. Or fir trees.): Unless you are actually working to save snowmen, reindeer, fir trees — or any other emblem of the winter holidays, avoid featuring any of these as the star of your fundraising appeal. The best use of an image is showing me a real photo of the people or animals my donation will help. Bonus: Avoiding the traditional clip art will also help your appeals stand out from the crowd! At the risk of being a Scrooge myself, here are three holiday fundraising pet peeves that I hope to see less often this year: Photo Source: Big Stock Photo Making me feel guilty about my daily coffee: The classic line of forgoing a daily latte to make a donation is often used to illustrate how easy it can be to find a way to give a little and have it add up to a lot. However, the world is certainly not going to be a better place if I skip my coffee (trust me), and I want to be inspired to give, not guilted. Let me give my donation in a happy, caffeinated state and leave Starbucks (and guilt) out of it. Year-end fundraising season is here and I’m seeing a steady stream of fundraising appeals arrive in the mail and in my inbox. As sure as I can count on receiving Aunt Nancy’s 3-page (front and back) annual family newsletter, there are a few themes that always seem to creep into the mix of these donation requests. Using too many shopping metaphors. Unless you can clearly tie the idea of shopping to giving the gift of charity, specific impact levels or a holiday giving catalog, as done very successfully by Heifer International or even Network for Good’s own Good Cards, consider leaving the shopping to the mall. Giving a donation is a highly personal and emotional act; don’t take me out of the moment by overusing phrases like: “buy now”, “holiday shopping” and “shopping list”.Your best bet to get me to donate to your cause in December? Tell a great story, stick to the point and clearly tell me what I can do to help. Happy fundraising!
It’s the time of year when a lot of us (including me) take stock. Why are we here? What should we be doing in 2013?A few years back, I was lamenting to my wise cousin Elisabeth that I wasn’t sure where I should focus my work. What was the best job for me? What was I meant to be doing with my life? She told me her method for figuring that out. She pays attention to when she feels jealous. If she hears about a job someone’s taken or a project someone has started and feels envious, that’s a clear sign it’s what she most wants to do. We’re not talking about the nasty kind of envy – as in the deadly sin where you feel diminished by others’ success and want to derail someone else’s good fortune. And I don’t mean longing for the fame and money that can be a side benefit of professional success. I simply mean the telltale twinge you feel when you hear about someone’s endeavor and wish you could do that, too. Stop and wonder: What about that activity creates a craving in you? Was it something you’ve always longed to try? Something you’ve been afraid to try? Maybe you can and should attempt that very thing. It’s a clarifying feeling. Jealous? Maybe you should be chasing that dream yourself.
