Three men still in custody in relation to body recovered from River

first_imgGARDAÍ ARE INVESTIGATING after a body was found in Athlone.The man, believed to be a Polish national, was taken from the river some time before 9pm last night.The body was recovered near the Athlone bypass bridge along the M6 Dublin to Galway road.The body of the man was discovered partially submerged in water at the River Shannon in an area known as Bogginfin. The area has been sealed off pending a full Garda technical examinationIn a follow up operation three men have been arrested in connection with the incident in the Westmeath area. They are detained at Athlone and Mullingar Garda Stations under the provisions of Section 4 – Criminal Justice Act 1984.The three men are still in custody and an extension to their detention is being sought in court.A post mortem examination will be carried out on the deceased at University Hospital, Galway later today.RTÉ reports that gardaí are also investigating reports that a man was seen being bundled into a car earlier in the day in the town.However, gardaí could not confirm this.The man was in his early 20s and gardaí say that they are investigating the full circumstances of the death, which is believed to be suspicious.Gardaí have also said they are investigating a second serious assault that took place in the town last night.Superintendent Noreen Hegarty has appealed to the public for information relating to both incidents.Gardaí are appealing for witnesses or to anyone who can assist with the investigation to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 6498550, the Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any Garda Station.First published 7.30amlast_img
