It’s another popular option for foodies – the breakfasts are legendary (the property recently received the AA’s sought after Breakfast Award) and the regular wine tasting sessions are popular with both guests and locals. 1. The Gilpin HotelWhere: WindermereRooms: From £325 per night Regarded as one of the UK’s best spa hotels, The Gilpin is one of the most luxurious places to stay in the Lake District. The main house (a beautiful Georgian affair) contains 14 bedrooms, while six wonderfully cosy garden suites can be found in a separate annexe. Fancy splashing out? Book one of the five spa lodges for some truly indulgent lakeside luxury. And if you’re looking for hotels near Lake Windermere, you’re in luck. The property, which is a certified Relaix and Chateaux hotel, is ideally located – it’s just a short walk from this beautiful expanse of water. 2. The Leathes HeadWhere: BorrowdaleRooms: £177 per night Nestled in the unspoilt wilds of Borrowdale Valley, The Leathes Head is surrounded by breathtaking scenery. A popular base for visitors embarking on activity holidays in the Lake District, the hotel is within walking distance of the Lake District’s best walking trails and watersports centres, and the views are unbeatable – simply step into the gardens for beautiful views over the valley to Keswick. This property’s for you. 17 acres of manicured gardens surround this Lake District hotel, which dates back to the eighteenth century. And you’ll be in good company – previous guests include Robert Southey and William Wordsworth, who once recited his famous Daffodils poem in the drawing room. The majority of the rooms comes with breaktaking views: of castles, forests and snow-capped peaks, and the hotel provides guests with list of activities for both sunny and rainy days. There are 30 rooms, but those with a weak spot for the finer things in life should consider the two-person Boathouse, which has a hot tub, steam room, private terrace and fire pit.9.Lyth ValleyWhere: KendallRooms: From £135 per nightA traditional country inn, Lyth Valley feels like a home from home. Beech Hill Hotel and SpaWhere: Windermere Rooms: From £169 per room per night Perched on the banks of Lake Windermere, this large hotel has a gorgeous spa (our favourite bit is the outdoor vitality pool) and sprawling, flower-filled gardens. Most of the 57 bedrooms have balconies, although if you’re splashing the cash, we recommend booking the Wordsworth Suite, with its seven-foot-long antique bed, roll-top bath and fantastic views over Lake Windermere. 5. Cottage in the WoodWhere: KeswickRooms: From £120 per room per night This impossibly cosy Lake District hotel has five AA stars and is famous for its food. Head to the restaurant for the finest local cuisine – we recommend the shellfish, plucked from nearby Whitehaven harbour. You’ll be able to choose from garden or mountain view rooms, but whichever you opt for, you’ll be soothed to the land of nod by a soundtrack of birds and a babbling brook – a small stream runs through the gardens of this seventeeth-century property. The hotel is ideally located, close to the historic market town of Keswick and several of the area’s most beautiful lakes, including Bassenthwaite, Derwentwater, Buttermere, Crummock water and Loweswater.
